Grow Me Instead

Lungwort

Pulmonaria officinalis

About This Species

Zone 3a

Grow me instead of Common comfrey

Lungwort is a charming garden perennial with soft, speckled green leaves and clusters of drooping blue, pink, and/or white flowers. Lungwort prefers shady locations with consistently moist but well-drained soils and grow to 30 cm tall. It does not tolerate full sun. Interestingly, lungwort is one of the very few plant species immune to the “poisonous” effects of the Black walnut tree, which sends out chemicals through its roots that impede the growth of neighboring plants. If you have a Black walnut tree, this is a great species to plant underneath it!

When selecting non-invasive plants for your garden, be sure to look for those that are suitable for your location, including moisture requirements, hardiness zone, and avoidance of known bear attractants among other factors.
