Invasive-Wise Tourism Program Launches

May 8, 2020 - The Invasive Species Council of BC is excited to announce the launch of a new Invasive-Wise Tourism Program in 2020.  BC is a top tourist destination for travelers worldwide and is known for its incredible diversity of natural landscapes, wildlife and wild spaces. British Columbia’s tourism industry is ranked as the most important sector to BC’s economy, however, tourism is also considered to be a major pathway for the introduction and spread of invasive species.

The Council is partnering with a diverse range of leaders in BC’s tourism sector, including business, industry and Indigenous tourism groups, to identify and develop key resources such as online training, recognition tools and outreach resources designed specifically for tourism operators and their clientele.  The overall goal of the project is to support the adoption and implementation of best practices to ensure invasive species are not introduced, moved or released in British Columbia.

The Invasive-Wise Tourism program will focus on aquatic pathways initially, with key learnings from the project to be adapted and applied to other elements of the tourism industry. The program also includes several exciting research components that will help inform invasive species management strategies and planning.
