About This Species
Grow me instead of Tree of heaven
Smooth sumac is a deciduous, hardy, native shrub that grows to 3 m. It has fern like leaves with protruding, rust-coloured berries that follow green-yellow flowers. The berries persist through winter and are important food for birds. In the fall, leaves turn a very bright red.
When selecting non-invasive plants for your garden, be sure to look for those that are suitable for your location, including moisture requirements, hardiness zone, and avoidance of known bear attractants among other factors.
