Elderberry
About This Species
Grow me instead of Tree of heaven
This genus is home to several species of deciduous shrubs 3-5 m tall with flat-topped clusters of flowers and pointed leaflets. Elderberry shrubs (also called elders) tolerate a range of soil conditions, but prefer nutrient-rich soils, and vary in berry colour from red, to black, to dusky blue, depending on species and variety. Elderberries are attractive to pollinators for their flowers and birds for their masses of sweet juicy berries.
When selecting non-invasive plants for your garden, be sure to look for those that are suitable for your location, including moisture requirements, hardiness zone, and avoidance of known bear attractants among other factors.
