Barrenwort

Epimedium spp.

About This Species

Zone 4b

Grow me instead of Yellow archangel

Barrenwort is an evergreen, spreading groundcover with leathery green leaves. The leaves often have red, purple, or maroon edges, especially when planted in full sun. It is both drought and shade tolerant, traits not commonly found together in a plant species. Barrenwort is ideal for hot, shady sites where other plants might struggle. Barrenwort has showy, columbine like flowers with varieties available in many different colors including yellow, purple, red, and white. Although this plant may look delicate, it is a very tough plant with low maintenance needs.

When selecting non-invasive plants for your garden, be sure to look for those that are suitable for your location, including moisture requirements, hardiness zone, and avoidance of known bear attractants among other factors.
