Invasive Species Council of British Columbia

Japanese Beetle Response and Collaboration in BC – 2023 Wrap Up Meeting

Japanese beetle

You are invited to attend a meeting about the ongoing, collaborative Japanese beetle response in British Columbia.

This meeting will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Pacific Time.  It will be held in-person at the Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) Head Office located at Room 2912, Metrotower III, 4515 Central Boulevard in Burnaby. You will also be able to attend virtually via Zoom.

Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) is a federally regulated pest in Canada. The 2023 surveillance (trapping) results continue to show low overall population numbers as a result of treatment activities and movement controls over the last five years. Movement and population growth of the beetle show continued risk to agriculture, horticulture and the environment in BC.

As a leader, stakeholder, or industry member situated in BC’s Lower Mainland, your extremely valuable feedback will assist with the development of recommendations for the Japanese beetle response activities in 2024 and beyond. Throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide input and make recommendations related to the Japanese beetle response.

Agenda items include:

  • An overview of Japanese beetle in the Pacific Northwest
  • An overview of the current Japanese beetle regulated areas in BC
  • Japanese beetle surveillance results (population and distribution)
  • An activities summary for 2023 and recommendations for 2024 from each of the Japanese beetle sub-committees:
    • Movement Controls
    • Treatment
    • Communications
  • Facilitated discussions to build recommendations for 2024 and beyond

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provides information about the Japanese beetle response on its website:

Before the meeting, you will receive an information package with background information about Japanese beetle, the response activities and the response members. This information will help prepare you for the meeting.

We look forward to your participation and contribution to these meetings. For any questions, please feel free to reach out at nwong@bcinvasives.ca or dwatson@bcinvasives.ca
