summit Background
The Invasive Species Council of BC convened the first Provincial Youth Summit in 2020. The Youth Summit brought together youth, leaders and industry experts from across BC. Attendees explored volunteer projects in habitat restoration and learned from environmental experts.
The 2022 Provincial Youth Summit takes place virtually on January 15, 2022.
summit Program
Hear from several exciting speakers including Simon Jackson, the founder of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, and Katie and Claire, the founders of Friendly Composting. Learn how illustrative nature journaling promotes biodiversity in BC and inspires appreciation of the natural world.
Who Should Attend
Young adults age 15-30 from across British Columbia that are passionate about protecting BC’s natural spaces and would like to be inspired to make a positive impact in their community.
Keynote Speaker
Simon Jackson
Simon Jackson, who shot to fame as the founder of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition when he was just 13 years old — is a storyteller, connector, and movement builder committed to improving our public discourse about the natural world. Discussing his personal story, as well as the intricacies of founding a non-profit, and navigating both business and politics, Jackson inspires audiences to realize the “power of one” to encourage change and challenges citizens to re-think how we tackle complex environmental challenges.
Jackson led the campaign to save the spirit bear for two decades, uniting the voices of six million young people, and helping create the largest land protection measure in North American history. For his efforts, he was named a Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine and was the inspiration for the movie, Spirit Bear: The Simon Jackson Story.
Today, Jackson is the co-founder of Nature Labs – a virtual, storytelling-driven high school textbook that helps students build a foundation of nature literacy to aid them in all that they do. By making education and nature more relevant and more engaging, Nature Labs aims to build the critical thinking skills necessary to create a more thoughtful citizenry and a more creative workforce—one that strives to find a better balance between the needs of people and nature.
Community Impact Speakers
Claire McLoughlin & Katie Forsyth
Friendly Composting
In March 2020, roommates Claire McLoughlin and Katie Forsyth were living in an apartment and wanted to start composting their food scraps only to discover that there was no organics collection or drop off service available in their community. They identified a gap where a sustainable initiative was required and Friendly Composting was born. After hand cleaning hundreds of repurposed bins, they volun-told friends and family to start collecting their food scraps and have figured it out every day since. Friendly Composting now collects organic waste for nearly 700 homes and 20 local businesses while offering local delivery from nearly 25 farmers and food producers, furthering their impact by encouraging composters to eat local and sustainably sourced food.
Workshop Presenter
Dr. Lyn Baldwin
Dr. Lyn Baldwin’s research includes the scholarships of discovery in plant ecology, teaching and learning, and integration. As a plant ecologist, her research has investigated applied questions around plants and their conservation, especially for those plants living on spatial or temporal margins, and how using tools from outside science, including place-based learning and the arts, can help students learn biology. In 2018, she received the Desire2Learn Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning for her use of drawing and creative writing to help botany students engage in deep and meaningful learning. In addition, she helps monitor the abundance of pollinator guilds within the South Thompson region by utilizing citizen science.
Dr. Baldwin also uses the art and science of natural history to re-story and reconcile home. Working from the belief that restoring the world must include our own re-storying within it, she uses illustrated field journals to help her re-imagine her relationship with home and community, place and dwelling. She shares the stories that she finds, expressed in both image and text, in art galleries, science museums and within the pages of journals such as The Goose, Terrain.org, Camas, and The Journal of Natural History Education and Experience.
