About This Species

Grow me instead of English holly

San Jose holly has been bred to closely resemble English holly without the invasive tendencies. This holly has the same glossy spiky leaves and abundant clusters of shiny red berries loved by birds (to get these berries you do need both a male and female tree planted close together). This hybrid has a narrow, conical shape and grows to 6 m tall. This holly is quite drought tolerant once established and does well in acidic soils.

When selecting non-invasive plants for your garden, be sure to look for those that are suitable for your location, including moisture requirements, hardiness zone, and avoidance of known bear attractants among other factors.
