Native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa, this submerged aquatic plant was introduced to North America in the 1940’s. Preferring still or slow-moving water, it is now one of the most widely distributed invasive aquatic plants on the continent, and was most likely introduced through the aquarium trade or the ballast water of ships.
